A co-pilot who "forgot" to land says he was not asleep and there was never any danger to passengers but why did they flew 150 miles past their destination airport remains a mystery. .

The first officer of NW188 denied as well disagreement with the captain as suspected earlier.

"We did not sleep; we did not argue we did not fight," said Richard Cole, the pilot.

NW188, carryied 144 passengers and five crew members from San Diego to Minneapolis, lost contact with controllers east of Denver, traversed the Plains, flew across busy airways carrying flights to Chicago and flew into Wisconsin before turning back to Minneapolis.

Failed Olympic Bid: Don't Blame It On Chicago

Extract from Joe Sharkey At Large Blog:

There are many reasons why Chicago failed getting the games but one of those is that is international revulsion to the hassles of simply entering the United States as a visitor.  Every foreign business traveler I know tells me that they brace themselves for the routinely unpleasant experiences at U.S. Customs and Immigration upon arrival at an American airport.

This is no secret to the U.S. tourism industry, which has been working for years to try to change the poor reputation the United States has among many foreign travelers -- a problem partly due to the experience of simply arriving at our shores, where many international visitors claim they are confronted with a surly bureaucracy and other excessive arrival hassles.

Prague a wonderful a town a nice airport but......

Having had a few hours at the airport I tried to work a little in the Internet but it looks like they don't want people to use their paid version.  I could use their free version without any problem at all but of course with the disturbance that every 5 minutes they show you their homepage whatever you just do. you can't simply not work with that.
I really wanted to pay for using a advertisement free service but no way. before I found it out my laptop was out of power.
Is there anybody who has found out how it works?  Google says its a broken link  but I tried on the 8th of October and on my way back the 11th same result.

Why not having a simple button on the index page:  click here for our paid service ??, no not even a text link! they ask you to write the address into the browser!  Sometimes I really can't understand what web designers think.

Washington, DC: The International Olympic Committee's elimination of Chicago as a possible host of the Summer 2016 Games during the first round of balloting demonstrates the need to change impressions of what the experience of travel to the U.S. is like for international visitors, the head of the U.S. Travel Association said.

Roger Dow, U.S. Travel's President and CEO, applauded President Obama's personal appeal on behalf of Chicago and for sending a welcoming message to international travelers around the world, but added, "It's clear the United States still has a lot of work to do to restore its place as a premier travel destination."

"When IOC members are commenting to our President that foreign visitors find traveling to the United States a 'pretty harrowing experience,' we need to take seriously the challenge of reforming our entry process to ensure there is a welcome mat to our friends around the world, even as we ensure a secure system," Dow said. "At the same time, the Travel Promotion Act is an important step in making sure international travelers know we want them to visit our country."

The Travel Promotion Act, which recently was passed in the U.S. Senate and is awaiting action in the House of Representatives, would create the first-ever U.S. promotion and communications program aimed at international travelers. Virtually all other industrialized nations spend at least tens of millions of dollars annually on advertising and promotion to attract foreign visitors. Studies show that such a campaign could attract millions of additional overseas visitors per year, resulting in billions of dollars in new visitor spending.

"Chicago has everything to offer and would have been an ideal venue for the Olympics," Dow said. "Officials from the city and the state of Illinois did a fantastic job of showcasing everything Chicago has to offer, and it's disappointing to have this $7 billion loss to its economy at a time it is sorely needed."

NEW DELHI: The Maharaja witnessed his first in-flight Mughal-e-Azam at 30,000 feet above sea level on Saturday, as two members of the cabin
endangering the lives of 106 passengers and grossly violating safety norms, the airline staffers came to blows in the cockpit and galley of the Indian Airlines Airbus A-320 as the aircraft cruised over Pakistan en route to Delhi via Lucknow from Sharjah.

The cabin-vs-cockpit tiff originated on the ground in Sharjah itself and then turned into a full-blown fight once IC 884 took off soon after midnight.

The cabin crew alleged that pilots harassed a 24-year-old female colleague who later filed a molestation complaint against them with the cops after the flight landed in Delhi.

The pilots, on the other hand, accused a male flight purser of misconduct that seriously compromised flight safety, and said the accusation of molestation aimed to protect the complainant's purser friend--who has a commercial pilot licence (CPL)--from facing action.

No party denied that blows and abuses were exchanged as bewildered passengers looked on. Sources said that the female cabin crew member and the co-pilot sustained bruises.

Confirming the in-flight fight, Air India said it had ordered an inquiry and had grounded the staff members involved. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has also ordered a probe.

There were unconfirmed reports that at one stage the cockpit was unmanned, as the crew was busy fighting outside. Things allegedly degenerated to the point where the captain threatened to divert the plane to Karachi, likening the situation, sources said, to a "hijack".

In Sharjah, the cabin crew went to meet Captain Ranbir Arora and co-pilot Aditya Chopra for the pre-flight briefing. Both sides give different versions of what happened after this.

The cabin crew lobby said that after the initial tension on the ground in Sharjah, when the woman crew member went into the cockpit, one of the pilots held her hand and then pushed her out of the cockpit.

"She hit the cockpit door with such force that she started bleeding. When Amit Khanna, the purser, saw her in this condition, he went to the cockpit to ask what was happening. At this point, the pilots got abusive and started a fight with him," said a representative of the IA cabin crew, who added that the actual fight took place on the Lucknow-Delhi segment.

Pilot sources claimed that despite his CPL, Khanna could not get a pilot's job due to the downturn.

"The airhostess had announced flying time from Sharjah to Lucknow as per the schedule, and not the actual one that the commander gives. After taking off, the pilot scolded the airhostess and then called Amit to the cockpit," said a source.

Khanna, the source added, entered the cockpit angrily and that's when the fight started. "He became abusive, and tempers ran high in the cockpit. Given the highly unsafe situation there, the commander said he would divert to Karachi, to which Amit retorted, 'Jahan le jaana hai, le jaao, is aircraft ko main bhi uda loonga (take it wherever you want to, I can also fly)'," a pilot representative said, adding that the fight occurred over Pakistan, while the plan was flying from Sharjah to Lucknow. The woman crew member, the source explained, got bruised when she entered the cockpit in the melee.

The cockpit was cleared, with pilots pushing out Amit and then locking the door. After that, the plane landed in Lucknow at around 4.30 am. "Amit then apologized to the pilots, and they took off for Delhi so that the flight wasn't delayed. He later got the woman crew member to level charges of molestation to avoid action for making a hostile entry into the cockpit," said a source speaking on behalf of the pilots.

The police are investigating the woman's complaint and have registered a case against the pilot and co-pilot. "There are several eyewitnesses and we are recording their statements," said joint CP (operations) Satyendra Garg. The police had the victim examined at Safdarjung Hospital, where her bruises were confirmed. A case was registered, among others, under Section 354 for outraging the modesty of a woman.

The DGCA is fuming at the gross violation of safety norms on IC 884. "The airline didn't even inform us of this incident in time. We're going to summon the crew members on Monday. This incident is shocking and we may need to take exemplary action," said a senior official.

Etihad Airways - no recession here!

In July 2009 Etihad Airways had its busiest month in its history. Over 616,000 passengers flew with Etihad that month. Its a nine per cent increase compared with July 2008.

July 31, Etihad had a record number of 21,640 passengers and a load factor of 90.3%. On one day only!

As well in July Etihad flights increased by 20% compared with last year with 900 take off and landings. The average load factor was 88% across first, business and economy class.

James Hogan, Etihad Airways chief executive, said: "The record breaking passenger numbers we have experienced in July demonstrate that, despite the current economic challenges, Etihad continues to attract high volumes of traffic across all three cabins on our global network of more than 50 destinations".

Etihad's flights to North America, Asia and Pacific recorded seat factors of more than 86 per cent. Within Europe  it was 82% and in the Middle East 77%.

In September Etihad Airways will launch non-stop flights from Abu Dhabi to Chicago and Cape Town.
After cutting back on routes and flights airfares are expected to raise.

As the demand for airline tickets is still lower than last year, the airlines are forced to compensate this with increased fares.

According to IATA (International Air Transport Association) who represents 230+ scheduled airlines worldwide, in August 2009 air travel was 1.1% less than in the same month of 2008. To stay flying international airfares are expecting to rise with 6% while domestic fares probably will increase 7% within the next future.

Air France and KLM has informed all their Swedish Travel Agents that commencing
December 1st 2009 they will add a Kr75 (US$11.00) credit card fee for each ticket issued and charged on any type of credit- or charge card.
It looks like they make a test in a small country like Sweden and if successful, implement it later in a bigger scale.
We should boycott airlines who excessively make use of surcharges, said one of the frequent fliers i spoke with today at the Stockholm Arlanda Airport.

Airlines need fees to stay profitable

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
For Airlines fees and extra offers is essential

From baggage to blankets, à la carte charges are becoming significant revenue sources for airlines

Just a few years ago air travel was simple: Buy a ticket, fly. But as airlines now need other income to help them master the recession, ares are just one piece of the travel experience. Whether it's a blanket and travel pillow, extra frequent flier miles or toys, the airline abin has changed to a in-air shop.

Extra money for products and services airlines the airlines can make is nowadays vital for them to maintain black figures.

JetBlue sells a $15 "doggie hoodie" or an expensive model of an Airbus A320. Allegiant Air knows that most of its customers are on leisure trips to Las Vegas, Florida, or Arizona. So midway through their booking process llegiant offers on their web site to create a book of your trip photos for an extra $60.

Allegiant, maybe because of this, is one of the few profitable U.S. airlines, where nearly 23% of their $504 million in 2008 revenue was coming.
